Year 2002 Activities & Highlights
The following are completed and projected Chapter activities and highlights included in the Missouri Show-Me Chapter, Soil and Water Conservation Society Year 2002 Annual Report:
- Executive Council meetings were held in April, June, August, October, and January during the Missouri Natural Resources Conference January 29, 2003. In addition, one General Meeting was conducted. Minutes of these meetings were included in the four quarterly newsletters that are available the chapter website: http://swcs.missouri.edu
- Chapter President, Diane Bradley, President-Elect, Bob Miller, and Past President, Gary Baclesse, served on the MNRC Quad Societies Leadership Council, which is comprised of the top leadership from four professional natural resource societies in the state: Missouri Wildlife Society, Missouri Society of American Fisheries, Missouri Society of American Foresters and the Missouri Show-Me Chapter, SWCS.
- A $300 donation from the Chapter to the Missouri State Envirothon Competition provided T-Shirts for participating high school students.
- The Chapter supported 6 officers/members to attend the WNC-Leadership Development Workshop in Ankeny, Iowa on March 27 – March 28, 2002.
- The Chapter hosted and manned the SWCS Both during the National Society of Range Management Conference held in Kansas City from February 15 – February 17, 2002. We had seven members help with this project.
- The Chapters Northeast Region conducted a SWCS sponsored tour at the NEMO Ethanol Plant with over 50 participants.
- The Chapter sponsored along with the Central Missouri Student Chapter SWCS a "Careers In Conservation" meeting for undergraduate students at UMC on March 21, 2002. There were 8 students in attendance plus chapter members. Bob Ball, Bill Kurtz, Bob Broz, Ross Braun, and Steve Anderson assisted in conducting the meeting.
- Executive Council meeting was held in April at Prairie Forks and the August meeting was held at the The Discovery Center in K.C. providing an educational opportunities.
- Chapter Past President Gary Baclesse serves on the Conservation Federation of the Missouri Board of Directors as the Chapter’s Liaison to the federation.
- Chapter Director of the Northeast Area, Craig King, serves on the State Envirothon Committee as the Chapter’s Liaison to the committee.
- Chapter Past President, Gary Baclesse, serves on the MoWIN Advisory Council as the Chapter’s Liaison to the council.
- The Chapters Southwest Region conducted a SWCS sponsored tour in conjunction with the Miami Creek/Drexel Lake 319 Field Day with over 104 participants.
- At least 12 Chapter members attended the 2002 SWCS Annual Meeting at Indianapolis, Indiana. Chapter members were responsible for at least 1 of the posters, 4 technical presentations, and the Chapter President attended the SWCS chapter development workshop.
- Chapter President developed a new member letter that is mailed out to all new members welcoming them to SWCS and the MO Show-Me SWCS Chapter.
- Developed a MO Show-Me Chapter Membership Brochure that outlines the chapter highlights and activities with a membership form.
- Conducted a membership drive that included the mailing of packets to all NRCS, MDC, and UE&O staff. This resulted in approximately 4 new members.
- The Chapter sponsored the SWCS Chapter Booth display and 4 members to attend the North Fork Watershed Project 3rd Annual Regional Watershed Conference, "The Land Your Community, Everyone’s Watershed", Tuesday, July 30, 2002.
- Chapter President made a presentation to the students participating in the NRCS Student Career Experience Program on membership and benefits of SWCS.
- Held our annual Fall Forum titled "Wetlands in Missouri: Challenges, Problems or Opportunities?" at the Governor’s Office Building, Jefferson City, Missouri on Tuesday, September 24, 2002. Speakers included representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation, EPA Region VII, NRCS, Kansas Alliance for Wetlands, Mauzey Soil Inc., and AGRIServices of Brunswick LLC. Approximately 61 people attended. (Information was posted on the Chapter website)
- WNC Regional SWCS Conference – Changing Faces of Conservation and Agriculture – the Future of Working Lands held October 8 – 10, 2002. Approximately 15 chapter members attended (James Sturn, Gary Baclesse, Bob Ball, Ross Braun, Tabitha Madzura, Bob Miller, Diane Bradley, Allan Johnston, Dennis Shirk, Ron Redden, Ken Bruene, Dan Downing, Larry Fischer, Liz Cook and Larry Pollard). There were 6 presenters and 1 exhibitor from the group.
